Limpopo top cop warns of perils of handling large sums of cash during festive season

Last updated on 2024-12-12

In a stark reminder for communities, Limpopo Police Commissioner. Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe issued a crucial warning to residents, especially members of social clubs, about the perils of handling large amounts of cash during festive season.

This cautionary message follows distressing house robbery that occurred on the night of December 9, 2024.

The incident unfolded in Strydkraal Block A village within Sekhukhune District, where a 54-year-old woman became a target for thugs.

Earlier that day, members of a local social club gathered at her home to plan distribution of their savings, a meeting that lasted from mid-afternoon until around 7 PM.

Once the meeting ended, club members returned to their own homes, leaving the woman and her teenage daughter behind, unaware of the danger that lurked.

At approximately 10 PM, three unidentified male intruders broke into the residence, seizing significant sum of cash belonging to the social club.

In a shocking turn of events, they confined both victims to a bedroom before escaping on foot.

Thankfully, the two were later rescued by a relative, who promptly alerted the authorities.

In response to this brazen act, police have initiated a formal investigation and a manhunt to capture the suspects.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, particularly during this festive time when robberies are more prevalent due to the propensity for keeping or withdrawing large sums of money at home.

Anyone with information that could aid in identifying the suspects is encouraged to reach out to Investigating Officer Captain Michael Thobejane at 082 414 2415, the crime stop number 08600 10111 or visit the nearest police station or use the MySAPSApp.

The police continue to emphasise the importance of safety and vigilance as investigations into this house robbery progress.
