Major crime bust in KwaZulu-Natal

In a significant crackdown on crime, KwaZulu-Natal police arrested 11,600 suspects in May 2025, including 232 for rape and 10 for attempted rape.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiund reported that the operations also led to the arrest of 161 suspects for murder and 192 for attempted murder, with police recovering 287 firearms, 16 of which were rifles.

The police efforts extended to serious robbery cases, resulting in 182 arrests for carjackings and business thefts.

Assault charges also saw a surge, with 2,521 suspects taken into custody for various offenses. Additionally, 417 suspects were arrested for burglaries and livestock theft.

Heightened police visibility through roadblocks proved effective, leading to 535 arrests of motorists under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Liquor-related offenses accounted for another 1,161 arrests, including public drinking and illegal distribution. Authorities also seized 709 dangerous weapons, such as 637 knives and 24 pangas, while recovering 131 livestock, including 63 cattle and 51 goats.

The multi-faceted operations continue, bolstered by community cooperation that provides crucial tips and leads, aiding police in their relentless pursuit of justice against crime.
