Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has come under scrutiny following allegations of irregularities in a terminated SAPS contract awarded to businessman Vusimuzi Matlala.
In a statement onTuesday responding to allegations made by KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner, Ndlandla Mkhwanazi against Minister Mchunu on Tuesday, Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi stated Mchunu ordered a probe into the tender after suspecting malfeasance but emphasised the minister had no prior contact with Matlala.
Mogotsi acknowledged Mchunu acquaintance with Brown Mogotsi, describing him as a political ally rather than an associate.
Public outrage erupted on social media over perceived contradictions in Mchunu’s accounts.
Critics highlighted his parliamentary denial of knowing Brown Mogotsi before later admitting their relationship.
X user Tiisetso Malepa challenged the distinction between comrade and associate, calling the explanation incoherent.
Others questioned how Mchunu could investigate Matlala’s tender while claiming no knowledge of the businessman.
Calls for resignation intensified, with user Williams@BBK29 accusing Mchunu of misleading Parliament and obstructing justice by disbanding a crime task force handling 120 active cases, including five high-profile murder dockets.
Corruption-Hater @MadiBoity demanded precautionary leave, arguing the minister’s conflicting statements undermine law enforcement credibility.
The controversy deepened as users referenced Mchunu’s alleged intervention to disband a unit investigating harassment claims against a task team.
@MokwadiMo accused the minister of protecting criminal networks, while @visse_ss likened the situation to a rotting cover-up.
Authorities maintain operational continuity in crime-fighting efforts, but public trust appears shaken amid demands for accountability and leadership changes.
