In a surprising turn of events, former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has announced her resignation from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and from Parliament.
Mkhwebane, who joined the EFF just one year ago, cited the need to spend more time with her family as the reason for her decision.
In a statement on X platform, Mkhwebane thanked the EFF for their support, especially during the alleged harassment that she and her family faced after her removal from the Public Protector’s office.
She claimed that her rights were violated during her time as Public Protector and that her removal from office was unconstitutional.
Mkhwebane also pointed to the challenges she faced during her tenure, including investigations into the CIEX/South African Reserve Bank report, CR17 donations, and Phala Phala.
She alleged that certain individuals were offended by her reports and findings, leading to attacks on her and her family.
Despite her resignation, Mkhwebane had kind words for the EFF, describing the party as a refuge and beacon of hope during her membership.
She expressed gratitude for their support during her “time of need” and credited them for helping her through difficult times.
As Mkhwebane bids farewell to the EFF and Parliament, she stated that she will continue to fight for the vulnerable where possible.
Her decision to step away from politics comes after careful consideration and discussions with her family, who advised her to take a break and focus on spending time with them.
