The Limpopo police have made a breakthrough, arresting a 44-year-old male suspect in connection with attempted murder incident that took place during political party campaigns at Juju Valley, Seshego on May 19, 2024.
The suspect, Jossey Modikane Buthane, was arrested on Friday morning for attempted murder of 25-year-old man shot during the violence.
Buthane, a former member and chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Limpopo, has since switched allegiance to the African National Congress..
He appeared before the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Friday, facing charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition.Â
Buthane was granted R5,000.00 bail and his case has been postponed to July 2, 2024 for further investigations.
Brigadier Hluani Mashaba confirmed the incident resulted in a 9-year-old girl sustaining gunshot wounds.
Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General,. Thembi Hadebe,has expressed satisfaction with the apprehension of the suspect and praised the investigative team for their significant progress.Â
In a statement, Lt. Gen. Hadebe affirmed the police force’s commitment to upholding law and order, ensuring that all citizens can exercise their democratic right to vote in a safe and secure environment.Â
She emphasised that the police will take strict action against anyone who acts recklessly, regardless of their social status.
Brigadier Mashaba added that the police are actively monitoring potential hotspots to address any threats that might arise during the upcoming election period.
