As the globe commemorates World Press Freedom Day on Saturday a chilling undercurrent overshadows the occasion.
The Institute for Public Accuracy (IPA) report that the year 2024 become the deadliest on record for journalists, with nearly 70% of those killed targeted by Israeli forces in Gaza.
According to IPA, the Watson Institute Costs of War project reveals a staggering toll—232 journalists slain in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and March 26, 2025, averaging 13 deaths monthly.
These figures underscore a harrowing erosion of press freedom in conflict zones, where truth-seekers face lethal retaliation for bearing witness.
IPA said amidst these harrowing statistics emerges the story of Abubaker Abed, a Gaza-based reporter for Drop Site News, now recovering in Ireland while pursuing studies.
Abed, who narrowly escaped death multiple times during Israeli airstrikes, recounts the systematic targeting of journalists by military forces.
“We’re not just covering the news—we’re surviving it,” he says, describing nights spent documenting rubble-strewn neighborhoods while dodging missiles.
His colleague Hossam Shabat, named on an Israeli military hit list, was among those killed, his camera still clutched in his hand.
Abed dispatches—like “Jabaliya Ii now a city of rubble” and “massacre at 2 a.m.”—offer unflinching accounts of Gaza’s devastation, where entire families vanish under collapsed buildings and rescue crews race against time.
“When I write ‘400 killed overnight,’ those aren’t numbers.
They’re my neighbours, my friends’ parents,” he stresses. Yet his work continues, fueled by a resolve to expose what he calls “a war on truth as much as on people.”
On this World Press Freedom Day, Abed appeal cuts through the noise: “Protection for Palestinian journalists isn’t a privilege—it’s a lifeline for accountability.”
He urges global audiences to amplify stories from Gaza, where reporters risk annihilation to document crimes.
As governments and press advocates gather for symbolic ceremonies, Abed defiance echoes an urgent plea: the world must act before the last witness falls silent.
