South Africa U.S. envoy under fire amid looming trade crisis

Democratic Alliance (DA) has intensified scrutiny of President Cyril Ramaphosa diplomatic strategy, revealing Special Envoy Mcebisi Jonas has yet to demonstrate progress in critical US tariff negotiations with just 16 days remaining before 30% duties take effect.

International Relations and Cooperation DA spokesperson, Emma Louise Powell warned key export sectors supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs – including citrus and automotive industries – face existential threats due to stalled talks.

The DA  highlighted stark contradictions in government actions: Former Deputy Trade Minister Andrew Whitfield was dismissed for unauthorised U.S. engagement attempts, while Jonas – appointed after Ambassador Ephraim Rasool’s expulsion – remains unaccountable despite his 90-day taxpayer-funded mandate.

Powell confirmed the DA will file a Promotion of Access to Information Act application to expose Jonas’ activities since April.

Powell raised alarms about Jonas’ dual role as MTN Group chairperson amid ongoing US lawsuits alleging the telecom giant violated anti-terrorism laws through Taliban-linked Afghanistan operations.

MTN Irancell partnership with US-sanctioned Iranian entities tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps further complicates Jonas’ position, with unresolved bribery allegations against South African officials cited in court documents.

“Either prove Jonas is actively preventing economic disaster, or replace him with an envoy whose business ties don’t compromise national interests,” Powell stated.

With the August 1 tariff deadline approaching, questions mount about whether Ramaphosa envoy appointment serves national crisis management or corporate entanglements.
