Taxpayers sue congress members for complicity in genocide: A landmark lawsuit

In a groundbreaking move, over 500 federal taxpayers from 10 Northern California counties have filed a class action lawsuit against their congressional representatives, Jared Huffman and Mike Thompson.

The lawsuit alleges that the congressmen abused their tax-and-spend authority by voting to allocate $26.38 billion in military aid to Israel, despite overwhelming evidence of genocide in Gaza.

According to the Institute for Public Accuracy, the plaintiffs claim that Huffman and Thompson’s actions violated the U.S. Constitution, the United Nations’ Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, and U.S. federal laws.

The lawsuit, filed in federal district court in San Francisco, states that the congressmen’s support for military aid was given despite knowledge of the Israeli military’s use of U.S.-provided weapons and munitions to carry out genocide in Gaza.

The plaintiffs, represented by Szeto-Wong Law, are a diverse group of individuals from various backgrounds, including young and elderly, educators, healthcare workers, Jewish and Palestinian Americans.

They had made extensive efforts to appeal to Huffman and Thompson to stop funding and arming Israel before the April 20 vote but were met with unresponsiveness.

Laurel Krause, a class member from Mendocino County, expressed her frustration, saying, “Over the last 14 months I have watched elected officials remain completely unresponsive despite the public’s demands to end the genocide.”

Carol Bloom, a class member from Sonoma County, added, “The moral injuries that I and countless other constituents of Representative Huffman have suffered resulting from his vote to arm the genocide in Gaza are immeasurable.”
