In a scathing criticism of the newly appointed Premier Phophi Ramathuba’s MECs in Limpopo, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed deep concern over the lack of accountability and transparency in the selection process.
DA Caucus Leader- Limpopo Legislature, Lindy Wilson, highlighted the reappointment of MEC for COGHSTA, Basikopo Makuma, despite his failings in addressing the water crisis in Limpopo.
Wilson stated that with a province that has consistently under-performed in the past five years, the DA had hoped for a fresh start with a cabinet free of skeletons in the closet.
However, our (DA) hopes were dashed with the reappointment of Makuma and the appointment of Kgabo Mahoai as the MEC of Treasury, who has a history of irregular expenditure and mismanagement of funds.
The DA also raised concerns about the re-election of Florence Radzilani as the MEC of Social Development, despite being implicated in the VBS heist.
“We believe that her involvement in the ongoing investigation should have disqualified her from managing such a critical portfolio with a large budget,” Wilson stated.
Additionally, the party expressed worries about the appointment of an MEC with no health background or experience to manage the health portfolio.
The DA fears that the poor and vulnerable communities in the province will suffer as a result of under-resourcing and understaffing in hospitals and clinics.
In response to these concerns, the DA has vowed to closely monitor every portfolio and hold every MEC accountable for poor performance, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery.
While the DA supports cooperation, the party will not hesitate to speak out against decisions that prioritize party or personal gain over the needs of the people.
It remains to be seen how the newly appointed cabinet will address the challenges facing Limpopo, but the DA is determined to ensure that the poor and vulnerable communities in the province are not left behind.
