Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) widely known as the Hawks and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) have once again made headlines.
This follows the arrest of four more traffic officials at the Bela-Bela Testing Station on February 12, 2025.
This latest development is part of an ongoing operation to root out corruption within the licensing process in Limpopo Province.
The arrests come as a result of an intensive investigation that was launched in 2021 to identify officials and testing stations involved in issuing licenses without following proper procedures in exchange for bribes.
The matter was reported to the Hawks in Polokwane, who conducted a thorough investigation before referring the case to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further action.
In a statement on Wednesday, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, spokesperson for the Hawks, revealed that warrants were authorized for the suspects’ arrest after the completion of the investigation.
A joint operation between the Hawks and RTMC led to the apprehension of the suspects, with the help of cutting-edge Hawks-sized gadgets that aided in the investigation.
This latest round of arrests brings the total number of individuals apprehended in the operation to 23, with previous arrests made in Lephalale, Thabazimbi, and Bela-Bela.
Brigadier Desmond Alexander, Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo Province, praised the collaboration between the Hawks, NPA, and RTMC for their efforts in combating fraud and corruption.
RTMC CEO Advocate Makhosini Msibi also commended the arrests as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and reducing fatalities.
The operation is ongoing, with more arrests expected in the near future.
The crackdown on corruption related to the issuance of driver’s licenses is crucial in ensuring the integrity of the licensing process and improving overall road safety in South African roads.
This latest development serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law, not even municipality
