Thornhill Church raid nets trio in midnight tech heist

Three young men face multiple charges after a coordinated police operation cracked a brazen church burglary in Thornhill, Eastern Cape.

The suspects, aged 21 to 29, allegedly stripped Peace House Church of its digital infrastructure during a night-time raid before attempting to escape with both loot and the congregation’s vehicle.

Investigators say the thieves struck between 7 PM on Monday and Tuesday at dawn in Phakamisa Locality house of worship, exploiting the empty building to steal two desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices, and audio equipment.

Their escape plan unravelled when officers discovered the church’s own vehicle missing – a critical clue in the investigation.

“This was textbook interdepartmental teamwork,” said police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, detailing how Thornhill detectives joined forces with Komani Crime Prevention and traffic officers.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday afternoon when a highway patrol intercepted the suspects’ vehicle on the R67 corridor near Whittlesea, recovering all stolen goods intact.

The rapid resolution – less than 24 hours from crime report to arrest – drew praise from Chris Hani District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph, who highlighted the operation as evidence of improved rural policing strategies.

The accused await formal charges of business burglary and motor vehicle theft at Ntabethemba Magistrate’s Court, their capture marking another victory in Eastern Cape’s intensified war against crime.
