The Democratic Alliance welcomed arrests of high-ranking South African Police Service Crime Intelligence figures, including Lieutenant General Khumalo, Brigadier Ncube, Brigadier Macondo, and Major General Gabala.
DA Member of Parliament and State Security Spokesperson Dianne Kohler Barnard described the move as critical, rescuing an institution nearing collapse.
Barnard highlighted a severe breach of trust within the agency tasked with national policing, adding that the DA will closely monitor the case.
This follows the party’s February appeal to the Inspector General of Intelligence after revelations that Crime Intelligence spent R22.8 million on a dubious commercial property in Berea, Durban, and R22.7 million on a luxury boutique hotel in Pretoria North.
These purchases, authorised by Major General Leshata as Chief Financial Officer and Crime Intelligence head Major General Dumisani Khumalo, represent only a fraction of alleged corruption threatening to dismantle the division entirely.
The arrests gained momentum when Major General Leshata surrendered to police ten days ago.
His state-issued firearm and laptop were stolen by a sex worker, and subsequent false statements led to his detention.
Barnard anticipates further arrests of senior police officials, citing years of state capture and corruption during former President Jacob Zuma era that turned Crime Intelligence into a cash cow for political allies.
The DA urged Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to ensure full legal accountability and imprisonment for those found guilty.
