United Nation Secretary-General António Guterres issued a forceful condemnation on Thursday following the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members in Washington, D.C., late Wednesday night.
Describing the act as “appalling” and “horrific,” Guterres emphasised through spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric that “nothing can justify” such violence against diplomatic personnel.
In a statement, the Secretary-General reaffirmed his longstanding stance against attacks targeting diplomats, urging authorities to swiftly identify and prosecute the perpetrator.
“The international community must unite to protect those serving diplomatic missions,” Dujarric stated, relaying Guterres’ call for accountability.
Guterres extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the Israeli government, stressing the need for solidarity in combating acts that undermine global diplomatic norms.
The incident has reignited discussions about security protocols for foreign missions in the U.S. capital.
