UN Secretary-General urges ceasefire between Israel and Iran

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern on Wednesday about the escalating military tension between Israel and Iran.

In a statement, Guterres reiterated his plea for an immediate de-escalation and a ceasefire to prevent further violence.

He cautioned against any further international involvement in the conflict, warning of the  severe repercussions it could have on the entire region and global peace.

The Secretary-General condemned the loss of civilian lives, injuries, and destruction of critical infrastructure caused by the conflict.

Guterres emphasised the importance of diplomacy in addressing Iran nuclear programme and regional security issues.

He urged all Member States to adhere to the UN Charter and international law, particularly international humanitarian law, to prevent further harm to civilians.

The Secretary-General highlighted  the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, emphasising that UN Charter serves as a vital framework for preventing war and promoting global security.
