US Secretary of State reassures European economies are not crashing amid trade uncertainty

While markets are reacting to the uncertainty brought about by the new tariffs, it is important to note that European economies are not crashing, US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio told reporters at a press conference at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

In a statement released by the US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce on Friday, Rubio told reporters while markets are reacting to uncertainty brought about by tariffs, European economies are not in a state of crisis.

Rubio acknowledged market volatility but assured reporters’ businesses would adapt once they understand new trade landscape.

He reiterated the US commitment to pursuing fair trade practices and reducing dependence on imports, particularly from China.

“To bolster American jobs and strengthen our economy, we must focus on manufacturing goods, not just services,” he stated.

Rubio address aimed to reassure public twhile there may be short-term market volatility, the US is working towards creating a more balanced and fair global trade system that will benefit American workers and businesses in the long run.

When questioned about European NATO allies’ ability to meet defense spending commitments amid economic turbulence, Rubio stressed the importance of adhering to these obligations.

“A strong defense is vital for the security of all member nations. Increased defense spending will ultimately benefit the alliance as a whole,” he said.

Despite concerns about short-term economic impacts of the tariffs, Rubio’s address aimed to reassure both domestic and international audiences of the US dedication to fostering fair global trade system.

“We are working diligently to ensure that American workers and businesses are positioned for success in the long run,” he said.

Rubio reiterated the importance of the US pushing for fair trade practices and decreasing reliance on imports, particularly from China.

He emphasided that in order to provide American jobs and strengthen the economy, the US must focus on producing goods and not just services.

Addressing concerns about European countries’ ability to increase defense spending while dealing with economic challenges, Rubio stressed the importance of NATO members meeting their commitments to defense spending.

He noted that a strong defense is essential for the security of all member countries and that increased spending will ultimately benefit the alliance as a whole.

When asked about the American assessment of the conditions that Russia has put forward regarding the Black Sea ceasefire talks, Rubio emphasised importance of testing Russia’s commitment to peace.

“We are in the process of finding out whether Russia is serious about peace or not. We will know soon enough whether they are truly interested in ending this war on terms that are acceptable to both sides,” Rubio stated.

He also acknowledged concerns expressed by the British and French foreign ministers about Putin dragging his feet in the negotiations.

“We can’t fall into the trap of endless negotiations about negotiations.

If Russia is not serious about peace, we will have to re-evaluate our next steps,” Rubio added.

Regarding possibility of resuming direct flights between the U.S. and Russia as a confidence-building measure, Rubio expressed caution.

“I haven’t heard anything about direct flights. All these people are sanctioned, so I’m not sure who would even be able to fly on them,” he explained.

Secretary Rubio reiterated the United States’ commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

“We are working through the process of testing Russia’s intentions. The Russians will have to decide about whether they are serious for peace or not, and we hope they are. It would be good for the world if this war ended,” he said.

Meanwhile reports emerged that Rubio had a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reaffirm unwavering support of the U.S. for Israel.

Bruce confirmed that during the call, the two leaders discussed escalating situation in Gaza and the U.S. Administration’s commitment to freeing the hostages being held in the region.

The discussion also touched on recently announced tariffs that are set to affect trade relations between the two countries.

In a show of solidarity, Rubio emphasised United States’ continued support for Israel’s security and sovereignty.

The talks come at a critical time as tensions in the region continue to mount, with concerns over the safety of the hostages in Gaza becoming a pressing issue.
