Zille drenched in controversy: Mayoral campaign stunt amid Soweto floods

JOHANNESBURG, April 15, 2026 – Helen Zille made a splash in her mayoral campaign as she waded through the flooded streets of Dobsonville,Soweto- specifically on Elias Motsoaledi Road, during torrential downpour in Gauteng.

With the city allocating just 26% of R8.7 billion so far of its 2025/26 capital budget for essential fixes like stormwater drains, Zille’s visit was framed by her team as the “#ZilleEffect” or “#GogoEffect,” coinciding with Joburg city crews pumping out water hours later.

However, the stunt was met with skepticism, with critics branding it mere political theatrics. Lukhona Mnguni, a political analyst, ridiculed Zille’s efforts, suggesting that the public is waking up to the gimmickry.

Joburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero responded sharply, stating that real solutions for Johannesburg would not come from “political theatrics.”

He accused Zille, based on her governance record in Cape Town, of favoring wealthy suburbs while leaving townships to grapple with systemic inequality.

Undeterred by the backlash, Zille took to social media to highlight the city’s financial mismanagement, asserting that funds meant for critical infrastructure projects had either been misappropriated or mishandled.

She urged residents to register to vote for the DA, promising a government that prioritizes essential services.

As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2026 elections, Zille’s dramatic display raises questions about the effectiveness of her campaign strategies and their potential to resonate with voters.
