A 46-year-old Zimbabwean national,Matthews Ncube, appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle a significant quantity of illicit creams into the country at Groblersbrug border post.
He is facing charges related to smuggling and contravention of customs regulations.
Ncube was remanded in custody until June 6, 2024, for a formal bail application.
Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the suspect was stopped during a routine inspection at the border post by vigilant officers stationed at Groblersbrug on Tuesday evening.
“The officers discovered multiple containers of illicit creams concealed within the cargo area of his truck, with an estimated value of approximately R126,000.00.
It is suspected that the creams were intended for illegal distribution within South Africa,” said Col Ledwaba.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe , commended the officers for their diligence and swift action, emphasizing their commitment to combating illegal smuggling activities and protecting the country’s borders.
