AfriForum, a civil rights organisation, has made an urgent appeal to the Tshwane Metro’s coalition partners to prevent an ANC-EFF coalition takeover.
In a statement on Tuesday, AfriForum claim residents handed over a petition signed by 17,000 people, calling on the coalition partners to leave no stone unturned in keeping the Tshwane Metro out of the hands of an ANC-EFF coalition.
According to Ernst van Zyl, AfriForum’s Head of Public Relations, “Through AfriForum’s petition, residents took an indisputable stand against a possible EFF-ANC coalition and made it clear that they do not want to see the Tshwane Metro again prioritise the ANC over its residents.”
This appeal comes after ActionSA announced its decision to step away from the coalition with the DA, VF Plus, ACDP, and IFP, increasing the threat of an ANC-EFF coalition.
ActionSA claims its decision was made in the public’s interest, stating they “remain steadfast in their determination to see clean and effective governance at national, provincial, and municipal levels” ¹.
AfriForum urges ActionSA to reconsider their withdrawal from the multiparty coalition, upholding their commitment to effective governance.
Van Zyl warns that residents’ fears are justified, citing Fikile Mbalula’s statement that the new Tshwane coalition “must serve the ANC and residents”
He also condemns parties aligning with the EFF, stating, “It is preposterous that a party like the EFF… will now possibly be part of a new municipal government.”
