Following weeks of negotiations and robust engagements, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has decided not to form part of the Executive of the Gauteng Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
This decision comes after the party declined the terms offered by the African National Congress (ANC) for seats in the Executive.
DA expressed frustration with ANC’s proposed allocation of 3 out of 10 Cabinet seats to them, without disclosing their own intentions or those for other parties.
Gauteng DA leader, Solly Msimanga, stated that the offer made to the party was unfair and unreasonable, and that the DA could not be co-opted into government as mere functionaries.
Msimanga emphasised the importance of principle-based negotiations and the need for fairness, proportionality, and adherence to the principles set out in the Statement of Intent signed by both parties on a national level.
In the spirit of unity and trust-building, the DA had entered into negotiations with the ANC, but found that the ANC’s refusal to be true partners in the process was a major obstacle.
Msimanga reiterated the DA’s commitment to being a strong opposition, and announced plans to form a new Shadow Cabinet to hold the new Executive and government departments accountable.
The DA’s decision to reject the terms offered by the ANC demonstrates their commitment to their principles and their unwillingness to compromise on fairness and integrity.
He said his party remains steadfast in their role as a vigilant opposition, dedicated to serving the people of Gauteng and upholding democratic values.
