EFF launches #UmntanaEskolweni campaign to ensure every child has right to education

As leaners across Gauteng prepare to kick off the new academic term on January 15, 2025, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is taking a stand to ensure every child has access to quality education.

The party has rolled out the #UmntanaEskolweni Campaign, aimed at addressing the challenges faced by schools in the province.

The campaign, led by EFF Structures, Ground Forces, and Public Representatives, will include oversight visits to schools to assess infrastructure readiness, textbook availability, and overall safety.

According to EFF the campaign comes at a crucial time as the ANC-led Gauteng Department of Basic Education continues to struggle with managing online applications, classroom shortages, and overcrowding – leading to over 19,000 rejected applications due to incomplete submissions.

In a statement on Tuesday, the EFF highlighted the need for improved information and guidance for parents, as well as a more efficient online registration system.

The party is calling on the Gauteng Department of Basic Education to ensure that no child is denied their right to education due to avoidable failures.

As part of their National Directives, EFF leaders and Public Representatives will adopt schools to provide support and resources, including school uniforms, learning materials, and mentorship, to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The party also vows to continue advocating for the speedy implementation of the BELA Act, which addresses language and admission policies that have been used to discriminate against prospective learners based on their skin color and background.

“By fighting for the timely establishment of norms, standards, and regulations, the EFF aims to ensure equal access to quality education for all,” added the party.

With Grade 12 results on the horizon and the spotlight on the Education department’s shortcomings, the EFF’s #UmntanaEskolweni Campaign is sure to make a significant impact on the educational landscape in Gauteng.
