Volkswagen Group Africa Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape has ended 2024 on a high note, celebrating a new production record of 167,084 vehicles.
This milestone surpasses the previous record set in 2019 and marks the highest number of vehicles produced at the plant since the first Beetle rolled off the production line 73 years ago.
Of the vehicles produced, 131,485 units were Polos exported to over 30 global markets, with an additional 35,599 vehicles destined for the local market.
Ulrich Schwabe, VWGA Production Director, credited the achievement to the dedication of the plant’s 4,000 employees, as well as the support of customers and stakeholders.
VWGA continues to expand its footprint both locally and globally, Schwabe emphasized the company’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and delivering high-quality products to meet the needs of diverse markets.
The success comes amidst continued investment in production infrastructure, employees, and product offerings.
In April 2024, VWGA announced a R4 billion investment into the Kariega Plant for the introduction of a third model, to be built alongside the Polo and Polo Vivo from 2027.
Plant Kariega is the sole supplier of the Polo GTI for global markets and, as of July 2024, also the sole supplier of the Polo for European and Asia Pacific markets.
The year 2024 proved to be a standout year for Plant Kariega, with a new record set in October for the highest number of units produced in a single month at 16,597 vehicles.
Schwabe expressed confidence in the plant’s continued success and growth as they strive to meet the demands of the plant diverse markets.
