‘Life imprisonment for caregiver’s son who raped minor in daycare’

Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Washington Simperi to life in prison for the rape of a ten-year-old girl.

Simperi, 20, faced one charge of rape.

According to Investigating  officer, Sergeant Mabale, on March 11, 2022, the girl’s mother took her to daycare as usual.

Unfortunately, the caregiver’s son, Simperi, abused the young girl while she was supposed to be safe.

During the attack, he used soap to blind her while she was bathing.

Afterward, he told her to go to the bathroom to try to destroy any DNA evidence.

The girl told her mother about the incident, who then called the police, resulting in Simperi’s arrest.

Medical examinations reveal the girl had suffered physical injuries from the assault.

To help prepare her for the court process, Court Preparation Officer Dineo Theoa worked with the ten-year-old.

Regional Court Prosecutor Lorraine Nel highlighted the seriousness of the crime, noting that it has deeply affected the victim’s trust.

Despite receiving counseling, the trauma will likely leave lasting emotional scars, including possible flashbacks.

The court determined that the injuries were not self-inflicted, as the defense claimed, and found no signs of false accusations.

The court also ordered Simperi’s name to be added to the National Sex Offenders Registry and deemed him unfit to own firearms.

He is further banned from working with or having contact with children.

National Prosecuting Authority, Regional Spokesperson,  Phindi Mjonondwane stated that the sentence offers closure and justice to the victim and her family, reaffirming the NPA’s dedication to holding accountable those who commit sexual violence and child abuse.
