Police intercept R1.2M stolen SUV bound for Zimbabwe

POLOKWANE— Authorities arrested a 22-year-old man Wednesday after a high-speed chase ended with a crashed stolen Toyota Prado SUV valued at 1.2 million rand, police said.

The vehicle had been reported stolen hours earlier from Pretoria.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said joint forces including provincial tracking units and private security firms located the white VX model moving toward Zimbabwe via the R71 highway.

The driver fled when approached near Mankweng, crashing into another vehicle at Solomondale railway crossing before being apprehended in nearby bushes.

A local school principal involved in the collision received hospital treatment, Ledwaba confirmed.

The suspect faces theft and reckless driving charges scheduled for Friday arraignment at Mankweng Magistrate’s Court.

Provincial Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe praised interagency cooperation, noting this marked the third cross-border vehicle recovery in Limpopo this month.

South African authorities report intercepting 47 stolen cars destined for neighbouring countries in 2025 through improved intelligence sharing.
