Volvo Car SA collaborates with local designers to create AI-inspired fashion

Volvo Car South Africa has announced an exciting collaboration with two South African designers, Fikile Sokhulu and Nao Serati Mofammere, to create unique fashion items using sustainable upholstery sourced from the fully electric Volvo EX30.

The designers used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help in the creation of their distinctive garments, under the slogan “Designed with AI, Crafted by Humans”.

Marishka Govender, Volvo Car SA Chief Financial Officer, emphasized the importance of sustainability and advanced technologies in the collaboration.

“We wanted to inspire the public to view sustainability and advanced technologies such as AI as concepts that can exist in harmony with human-centric ideas of beauty and creativity,” said Govender.

Sokhulu and Mofammere were tasked with incorporating both AI technology and sustainable design practices into their creative processes.

Sokhulu, known for her work with natural fibres, incorporated materials from the Volvo EX30’s Indigo interior theme into her design.

Mofammere, known for his unisex garments with a South African flair, used upholstery from the Volvo EX30’s Mist interior theme.

The resulting outfits will be displayed at various Volvo dealerships around South Africa, showcasing the versatility and creative potential of sustainable materials and AI technology.

Through this partnership, said Govender Volvo has successfully pushed the boundaries of how automotive materials can be reimagined as fashion.

As Sokhulu explained, “The fabric was surprisingly simple to work with, allowing me to easily incorporate natural ideas of both symmetry and asymmetry.”

Mofammere added, “I embraced the ideas put forward by AI, opting not to fight the technology but rather take the opportunity to create something unique out of it.”

Volvo’s collaboration with Sokhulu and Mofammere highlights the brand’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and creativity in both automotive and fashion industries.
